Based on available information, there are mainly two production routes for diethyl sulfate: 1. The synthesis method using ethylene and concentrated sulfuric acid. In this process, ethylene is introduced into 95% concentrated sulfuric acid; the reaction occurs at around 60 degrees Celsius, resulting in a mixture containing diethyl sulfate, ethyl sulfate, sulfuric acid, and water. This mixture is then heated together with anhydrous sodium sulfate, and after vacuum distillation, pure diethyl sulfate with a purity of 99% can be obtained. The yield can reach 85%. This method is highly suitable for manufacturers producing ethylene products, offering the advantages of high economic efficiency and high yield. 2. Synthesis method using ethanol and concentrated sulfuric acid: This method utilizes readily available and inexpensive raw materials, and requires simple equipment. It is a suitable method for small- and medium-sized manufacturers. However, this method has the disadvantages of many side reactions and a low yield. The synthesis of diethyl sulfate by the ethanol method is carried out in two steps. First, prepare ethyl hydrogen sulfate ; The second step is to synthesize diethyl sulfate using ethyl hydrogen sulfate. For the preparation of ethyl hydrogen sulfate, a certain amount of ethanol is added to a 500-milliliter four-necked flask equipped with a stirrer, a reflux condenser, a thermometer, and a dropping funnel; the reaction temperature is controlled using a water bath. While stirring, add a certain amount of concentrated sulfuric acid dropwise. Be careful to control the dropping speed so that the reaction temperature remains unchanged. After stirring for another 15 minutes, cool the reaction mixture. After cooling, a certain amount of dehydrating agent is added and stirring is accelerated; once the temperature stabilizes, filtration under vacuum is carried out. The filter cake can be reused after treatment, while the filtrate consists of a mixture of ethyl hydrogen sulfate, unreacted ethanol, and sulfuric acid. The preparation of diethyl sulfate involves placing the filtrate containing ethyl hydrogen sulfate in a distillation apparatus, heating it for distillation, and collecting the distillate. When the temperature of the distillate exceeds 95 degrees, stop distillation. Cool the distillate with ice water and let it stand to separate into layers. Separate the organic layer, dry it over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and filter. The filtrate was placed in a vacuum distillation apparatus and subjected to vacuum distillation; the fraction at 80–82 degrees was collected to obtain the product.

The distillate is subsequently cooled and allowed to settle to separate into layers. Separate the organic layer, dry it over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and filter. Distill the filtrate under reduced pressure, and collect the distillate at 80–82°C; this is diethyl sulfate.
