A meeting was held to evaluate this scientific achievement. This represents a major breakthrough in the research and development of new biomass materials in our country, and it can replace traditional fossil-based benzene-derived raw materials on a large scale. More than 70 years ago, an American scientist discovered through experiments that 5-hydroxymethylfurfural could be extracted from biomass materials such as starch, sucrose, and lignocellulose. Since then, researchers have been working to use it as a substitute for petrochemical benzene-based raw materials, but all companies at home and abroad involved in the development of such products have so far failed to achieve mass production. The research team at the Ningbo Institute of Materials Science began working on the development of HMF in 2012. After years of hard work to overcome various challenges and to bridge the gap between pilot-scale and laboratory-scale testing, the process entered the fast track toward industrialization. In July 2023, Tangneng Technology completed the construction of a HMF production line with a capacity of thousands of tons; after thorough optimization and testing, continuous and stable operation was ultimately achieved.
It is understood that 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, as a bio-based platform compound, has a wide range of applications, including surfactants, as a substitute for formaldehyde, in antioxidant pharmaceuticals, as fine chemicals for food-grade flavors and fragrances, in polyester plastics, and in special functional materials. The global demand for this compound exceeds tens of millions of tons. Fossil-based polyester PET is widely used in plastic packaging and fiber products, but its production process generates high emissions, and it does not degrade easily over hundreds of years. The production of the polyester PEF derived from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural not only enables green and low-carbon manufacturing, but the resulting product can also be degraded within one year. At present, this 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) production line with a capacity of thousands of tons is operating continuously and stably. This year, Zhejiang Tangneng Technology Co., Ltd. plans to build a production facility for bio-based new materials with a capacity of ten thousand tons in Daishan.
