Safety first. Prevention first – let’s give praise and support to the achievements made in China’s chemical engineering technology and equipment. **********************【Ten Years of Great Development in Chemical Engineering Equipment】Regular updates and summaries are available; feel free to join the discussions at https://bbs.hcbbs.com/thread-3576046-1-1.html (Source: Haichuan Chemical Engineering Forum) ***************** On March 2, 2017, the “100-ton scale industrial test of polymethyl methacrylate” project carried out by the R&D institute of Jilin Petrochemical Company was successful from the first attempt. The molecular weight distribution, mechanical properties, light transmittance, and other indicators of the pilot-scale products all meet the contractual requirements, laying the foundation for the successful completion of the 50,000-ton-per-year process package and its industrialization. Methyl (PMMA) is an acrylate polymer. As a transparent material with excellent performance, it is widely used in various lighting fixtures, optical components, instrument dials and casings, scales, commercial display windows, aircraft cockpit glass, bulletproof glass for airplanes and automobiles, as well as in medical and military applications. In recent years, with the continuous expansion of applications for liquid crystal display technology and ongoing research in fiber optic applications, it has also been used to manufacture artificial corneas due to its excellent transparency. Additionally, its bulletproof and high-impact resistance properties have led to its growing use in automotive and military glass. PMMA has become a hot investment area due to its high market demand, high technical complexity, and good economic returns. The “100-ton scale industrial test of polymethyl methacrylate” carried out by Jilin Petrochemical Research Institute is a major technical field test project of China National Petroleum Corporation. Building on the pilot tests completed in December 2015, the research institute established China’s first pilot-scale production facility capable of producing 350 tons of PMMA per year. Yang Jinseng, the project leader and director of the Research Institute for Synthetic Rubber and Resins, said, “Although the pilot plant was successfully started up in one attempt and qualified products were produced, there are still many areas that can be optimized and improved.” Through pilot-scale testing and verification, a basis has been provided for pilot plant optimization and improvement. Next, we will communicate with relevant domestic manufacturers to steadily advance the development of independent PMMA technology through improvements in overall technical capabilities, thereby laying a foundation for creating process software packages capable of producing 50,000 tons per year as well as for developing specialized materials such as PMMA used in light guide plates. ” Due to the immaturity of its own chemical engineering technology and the lack of key equipment and materials, it has relied on foreign technologies in the past. As China’s scientific and technological capabilities continue to improve, the constraints are gradually decreasing, and it is expected that this progress will accelerate further.
