Air Liquide is developing large-scale projects for the production of low-carbon hydrogen and renewable hydrogen, as well as for their liquefaction and distribution. The company has received 110 million euros in funding from the European Innovation Fund for its ENHANCE project located at the Antwerp-Bruges port in Belgium. This project aims to produce and distribute low-carbon and renewable hydrogen made from ammonia. As part of this project, Air Liquide plans to build, own, and operate the first large-scale renewable ammonia cracking plant and an innovative hydrogen liquefaction facility. ENHANCE is Europe’s first industrial-scale project to produce and distribute low-carbon and renewable hydrogen using ammonia as a raw material. As part of this project, Air Liquide plans to transform a hydrogen production facility located in the Antwerp-Bruges port, using renewable ammonia as a raw material instead of natural gas, and will also build a hydrogen liquefaction plant. This new plant will support the development of a low-carbon and renewable hydrogen supply chain in Europe, and help customers in sectors where emission reductions are difficult to achieve to achieve decarbonization, such as oil refining, chemicals, as well as heavy road, maritime, and aviation transport. Using ammonia instead of natural gas to produce gaseous and liquid hydrogen will enable this project to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 300,000 tons per year. The project will leverage the knowledge and expertise gained from the group’s ammonia cracking pilot plant located at Antwerp Port. " Ammonia is a molecule composed of hydrogen and nitrogen, and low-carbon hydrogen can be produced in regions with abundant renewable energy sources such as solar, hydro, and wind energy, or other low-carbon energy sources. The global supply chain infrastructure is in place to enable the large-scale production, transportation, and utilization of ammonia to serve various industries. The European Innovation Fund is one of the largest global initiatives for promoting innovative low-carbon technologies; receiving funding from this fund represents an important milestone in the final investment decision and launch of such projects.
