This initiative has successfully demonstrated the use of renewable hydrogen in the coal chemical industry, filling a gap in China regarding the operation of systems that combine photovoltaic-generated renewable hydrogen with coal-based ammonia production, thereby further promoting the sustainable development of Ningxia Coal Industry Company. The first phase of the Ningdong Renewable Hydrogen Carbon Emission Reduction Demonstration Zone project is **the Energy Group’s first project of producing renewable hydrogen via photovoltaic power on a scale of 10,000 cubic meters, in combination with coal-based ammonia production. It represents the first innovation ecosystem in Ningxia focused on the entire hydrogen industry chain. It is also China’s first project in the coal chemical sector to utilize green hydrogen on such a scale, as well as China’s first innovation ecosystem that integrates all aspects of the hydrogen industry chain – including the production, storage, transportation, utilization, and testing of renewable hydrogen – into one cohesive system. It is understood that the Qingshuiying hydrogen production plant represents **Energy Group’s first attempt in the field of renewable hydrogen combined with coal chemical processing. It utilizes 120,000 kilowatts of photovoltaic power to generate hydrogen through a photovoltaic alkaline water electrolysis process; the total hydrogen production capacity is 15,000 standard cubic meters per hour, with an annual designed output of 3,080 tons. The plant is equipped with 16 alkaline electrolyzers (15 in operation and 1 as a backup), and the hydrogen produced is purified to 99.999% purity, pressurized, and then transported via pipelines to the ammonia synthesis unit at Olefin Company No. 2. By replacing part of the gray hydrogen with the renewable hydrogen produced by this plant, it will help to transform gray hydrogen into green hydrogen, replace coal with hydrogen, and reduce carbon emissions through the use of green hydrogen; this approach can result in a reduction of approximately 202,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year, as well as savings of around 54,000 tons of standard coal per year. On September 20, the renewable hydrogen produced by the Shimizu Hydrogen Production Plant was successfully integrated into the coal-based synthetic ammonia facility of Olefin Company 2, completing the entire electricity-hydrogen-chemical system. This marked the successful connection between a photovoltaic-based system for producing renewable hydrogen on a scale of 10,000 cubic meters and the world’s largest coal-to-oil project. Over the past 3 months, to ensure the successful commissioning of the green hydrogen project, under the guidance of the Coal Chemicals Management Department of Ningxia Coal Industry, Olefin Company No. 2 has carried out careful organization and thorough planning. It established a leadership team for the hydrogen production project’s commissioning, developed plans for integrating green hydrogen into the system as well as emergency response protocols, defined key aspects of response actions and detailed the corresponding measures. Regular coordination meetings were held regarding the project’s commissioning to address any issues that arose in a timely and efficient manner. At the same time, Olefin Company 2 carried out thorough inspections, verifications, and commissioning of the safety conditions related to the pipelines for the mutual supply of hydrogen and utility materials. It managed the introduction of green hydrogen in a scientific and efficient manner, ensuring the safe introduction and stable operation of the ammonia synthesis plants. Next, Olefin Two Company will, in line with the progress of the trial operations carried out by Guoneng (Ningxia Ningdong) Green Hydrogen Energy Co., Ltd., actively cooperate in the calibration of various electrolyzers, and continue to increase the volume of green hydrogen received. Ultimately, it aims to successfully complete the task of receiving green hydrogen at full capacity (15,000 standard cubic meters per hour), thereby achieving a target of having more than 30% of the hydrogen used in the ammonia synthesis plant come from green hydrogen rather than gray hydrogen.
