Paris, February 18, 2025 – To achieve the goal of decarbonizing the hydrogen used in European refineries by 2030, TotalEnergies has signed an agreement with Air Liquide to develop two projects in the Netherlands to produce and supply around 45,000 tons of green hydrogen per year, powered primarily by electricity from the OranjeWind offshore wind farm, which is developed jointly by TotalEnergies (50%) and RWE (50%). These projects will enable TotalEnergies’ refineries in Belgium and the Netherlands to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 450,000 tons per year, contributing to Europe’s renewable energy goals for the transportation sector. The two companies have signed an agreement to establish a joint venture, with TotalEnergies holding 50% and Air Liquide holding 50%, which will build and operate a 250 MW electrolyzer near the Zeebrugge refinery. The project will enable the production of up to 30,000 tons of green hydrogen per year, most of which will be supplied to the Zeeland platform. The electrolyzer is scheduled to come into operation in 2029, and it will reduce carbon dioxide emissions at this site by up to 300,000 tons per year. The project requires an investment of around 600 million euros from both parties, and support has been sought from European and **subsidy programs. Funding for the project will also be sought jointly by both parties. Furthermore, as part of Air Liquide’s 200 MW ELYgator electrolyzer project in Maasvlakte, the Netherlands, TotalEnergies has signed a processing agreement under which 130 MW will be dedicated to producing 15,000 tons of green hydrogen per year to supply TotalEnergies’ refinery complex in Antwerp. Under this agreement, TotalEnergies will supply the renewable electricity generated by the OranjeWind project to Air Liquide for conversion into green hydrogen. The project is expected to come online by the end of 2027, and it will reduce carbon dioxide emissions at the Antwerp site by up to 150,000 tons per year. TotalEnergies is committed to reducing the environmental carbon footprint associated with energy production, conversion, and distribution. One approach identified by the company is to use low-carbon hydrogen to decarbonize refineries in Europe; this measure is expected to help reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by around 3 million tons by 2030. To achieve complete decarbonization of hydrogen in European refineries, TotalEnergies has signed contracts for the production of over 170,000 tons of green hydrogen per year with several projects, covering the refineries in La Mède and Grandpuits in France, as well as the refinery in Leuna in Germany, plus refineries in Belgium and the Netherlands.
