First 10,000-ton capacity straw-based succinic acid production line put into operation 2025-04-07 Recently, Suzhou Juyi Yuanchuang Biotechnology Co., Ltd., in collaboration with universities such as Tsinghua University and MIT, has successfully built the first 10,000-ton capacity biological synthesis production line for straw-based 1,4-succinic acid. This technology uses crop straws as raw material and, through a comprehensive process of \"straw pretreatment – fiber saccharification – synthesis using engineered strains\", produces 1,4-butanedioic acid on a large scale. This compound serves as a key raw material for strategic products such as bio-based biodegradable plastics (PBS/PBAT) and polyurethanes, thereby breaking away from the reliance on petroleum or grains as raw materials and contributing to the achievement of the \"dual carbon\" goals. Three major technological innovations drive industrial upgrading in terms of efficient raw material processing. By utilizing a clean separation technology based on the three components of lignocellulose, it is possible to effectively separate cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin from straw. Combined with AI-driven optimization of the enzymatic hydrolysis process, the sugar conversion rate of fibers exceeds 90%, while costs are reduced by more than 30%. The modular preprocessing system is suitable for various types of straw such as rice and wheat, ensuring flexibility in raw material usage. Flexible biosynthesis: By leveraging synthetic biology to create \"programmable cell factories,\" switching between different strains and metabolic pathways enables a single production line to manufacture high-value molecules such as succinic acid, butanediol, and farnesene, meeting the needs of various fields including biological materials and fine chemicals. Smart large-scale production: Modular production line design enables phased expansion, and the integration of IoT and AI technologies allows for real-time optimization of fermentation parameters, ensuring continuous and stable production and providing a replicable commercial model for biosynthesis on a global scale. Win-win for environmental protection and business value: Zero-carbon transformation – using straw as a substitute for petroleum/grain raw materials to reduce carbon emissions by hundreds of millions of tons per year ; Industrial chain collaboration: Working with leading enterprises in the downstream sector to promote the use of straw-based products in areas such as bioplastics and animal nutrition ; Economic benefits: The technology covers the entire chain from raw materials to manufacturing processes and multiple products, creating an industrial ecosystem that enables multiple uses of the same source, thereby reducing scale-related costs by over 40%. Future Outlook: The team at Juyi Yuanchuang Technology states that this platform will accelerate the global adoption of non-grain-based biosynthesis. Production capacity is expected to reach 100,000 tons within the next three years, thereby facilitating the replacement of traditional petrochemical products with bio-based materials and serving as a model for the green transformation in synthetic biology.
