Scientists at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering in the United States have successfully developed a new type of polyurethane material for the first time by mixing lignin (a substance found in plant cell walls) with carbon dioxide. Assistant Professor Ho Yong Chung said, “We have synthesized a high-quality polymer using fewer steps, with lower energy consumption, and without any toxic components.” It is more environmentally friendly, safer for humans, and easier to produce. ” The use of toxic isocyanates is completely avoided. Traditional polyurethane production relies on highly reactive hazardous chemicals known as isocyanates, whereas the method developed by this research team avoids such substances entirely. The research team used lignin (a natural polymer that is usually discarded during pulp and paper manufacturing) to create a biodegradable material made from renewable resources. This innovation retains the advantages of polyurethane, including strength, heat resistance, and flexibility, while avoiding its negative impacts on the environment and health. This technology also converts the captured carbon dioxide into useful raw materials. The resulting polymer has strength comparable to that of traditional polymers, but is more soluble in solvents, greatly improving processing convenience. Ho Yong Chung emphasized: \"Compared to other bio-based alternatives, our material offers significant processing advantages.\" Fewer reaction steps are required to produce products of equal or higher quality, which significantly saves energy and costs. " Exploring more uses for lignin: This research team has been dedicated to studying the applications of lignin for a long time; in 2024, they succeeded in using it to produce polycarbonate materials renowned for their high strength and good light transmittance. This latest study focuses on the broader application of polyurethane materials. Ho Yong Chung has been researching the use of lignin in adhesives since his graduate studies, and has witnessed the potential for breakthroughs of this material in the fields of medicine, energy, and sustainable manufacturing. Ho Yong Chung said, “Polyurethane is a very important material.” Through this non-toxic innovative process, we can contribute to the world.
