Let’s give praise and support to the achievements made in China’s chemical engineering technology and equipment; your participation in discussions is the greatest encouragement. **********************【Ten Years of Progress in Chemical Engineering Equipment】Regular updates and summaries are available – feel free to join the discussions: https://bbs.hcbbs.com/thread-3576046-1-1.html ***************** Recently, Jilin Petrochemical Company’s 200,000 tons per year ABS production facility using the bulk method was able to produce qualified products, marking full domestic production of ABS technology and related equipment in China. ABS is a polymer material formed through the copolymerization of three monomers: acrylonitrile (A), butadiene (B), and styrene (S). It is a widely used thermoplastic engineering plastic. The core technology behind this major breakthrough stems from over 30 years of dedicated research and continuous improvement by Professor Li Yang’s team at the School of Chemical Engineering of Dalian University of Technology, demonstrating the university’s strong foundation and innovative capabilities in polymer science in serving strategic needs. As pioneers and leaders in the research of styrene-based toughening resins in China, Professor Li Yang’s team has long focused on the strategic goal of achieving self-sufficiency in high-end chemical materials. By addressing the key challenges faced by the industry, they have successfully developed the core technologies for toughening resins produced via continuous bulk synthesis. They have established a comprehensive system of independent intellectual property rights covering process methods, product ranges, and equipment design; the impact resistance of their products is at the international leading level, providing crucial support for the upgrading of China’s ABS industry. Behind this breakthrough lies decades of accumulation and inheritance in the field of polymers at Dalian University of Technology, building on the strengths of the School of Chemical Engineering in areas such as polymer synthesis and the control of structural and functional properties. The team has developed a distinctive research framework in areas such as polymer material design for polymerization reaction engineering. From innovations in fundamental theories to the development of key technologies, and from laboratory-scale experiments to industrial production on a scale of tens of thousands of tons, the discipline has always adhered to a **demand-oriented approach**, fostering integration and mutual promotion among research, teaching, and industry. It has trained a large number of polymer specialists who are committed to working in the industry and eager to innovate, thereby creating a bridge between the laboratory and industrial application. It is reported that the rapid implementation and efficient transformation of these achievements are made possible thanks to the full-range technical support provided by Dalian Xingmeige New Materials Technology Co., Ltd., a company affiliated with Dalian University of Technology. Since granting technology licenses to Jilin Petrochemical Company in 2022, Xingmeige has provided comprehensive technical support for the construction of a 200,000-ton/year ABS production facility, covering process design, equipment debugging, and production optimization. This has led to the creation of a new collaborative model for industry-university-research cooperation, one that involves original research by universities, transformation by specialized companies, and application by leading enterprises. Such a model not only accelerates the industrialization of scientific research results but also provides a replicable and sustainable approach for universities to get deeply involved in major engineering projects. According to Professor Li Yang, compared with the traditional emulsion process, the continuous bulk ABS technology developed in this project offers significant advantages such as a shorter production process, lower energy consumption, reduced investment costs, and better environmental compatibility. The products produced have a pure white base color, are resistant to yellowing, and contain low levels of residual monomers, enabling them to meet the stringent performance requirements of industries such as automotive interiors, high-end home appliances, and electronics. Once the facility is put into operation, Jilin Petrochemical’s total ABS production capacity will increase to 1.8 million tons per year, placing it among the top producers in the world and contributing significantly to the advancement of China’s petrochemical products toward higher quality and greater sustainability. The full implementation of domestic ABS technology represents an important step taken by Dalian University of Technology to stay at the forefront of global science and technology as well as to contribute to the key areas of the economy. Dalian University of Technology will continue to strengthen organized research, deepen the integration of industry, academia, and research, and support more high-quality research outcomes from reaching the industrial sector through platforms such as discipline-based companies, thereby continuously contributing to the innovation and upgrading of China’s manufacturing industry.
