As China’s highest academic institution in natural sciences and its top advisory body for science and technology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences has been guiding the direction of development in China’s science and technology since its establishment in 1949. The academician system is the highest honor in China’s scientific community, and the Department of Chemistry is an academic institution that brings together top scientists. Where do these academicians come from? In this issue, the editor has compiled a list of the outstanding scientists from the Department of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences who come from the Northeast, North China, Central China, and Northwest China regions (classified by place of birth). Let’s get to know these scientists who have made remarkable contributions to the field of chemistry. There are a total of 19 academicians from the Northeast region, including 8 from Liaoning Province, 10 from Jilin Province, and 1 from Heilongjiang Province. Liaoning Province ***: A chemist and expert in nanotechnology who has conducted research on the structure and physical properties of polymer catalysts, X-ray diffraction of the crystal structures of organic compounds, molecular mechanics, and EXAFS of conductive polymers. He was responsible for the development of the scanning probe microscope (SPM) series and has carried out systematic work in the fields of nanostructures and molecular nanotechnology. Born in September 1953, from Dandong, Liaoning. Graduated from Peking University in 1978, and obtained his master’s and doctoral degrees from the Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1981 and 1985 respectively. Elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1997. Bu Xianhe: Inorganic chemist, mainly engaged in research on functional complex chemistry. Born in Chaoyang City, Liaoning Province, in August 1964. Graduated from Nankai University in 1986, and obtained a doctorate from the same university in 1992. Elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2021. Xie Zaiku: An expert in petrochemicals, mainly engaged in fundamental and applied research on catalysis. Born in Pulanian City, Liaoning Province, in September 1963. Graduated from Fushun Petroleum Institute in 1985, and obtained a doctorate from East China University of Science and Technology in 2000. Elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2017. Yu Jihong: An expert in inorganic chemistry who has been engaged for a long time in research on the synthesis and preparation of inorganic porous functional materials. Born in January 1967 in Anshan City, Liaoning Province. Graduated from the Department of Chemistry at Jilin University in 1989, and obtained a master’s degree and a doctor’s degree from Jilin University in 1992 and 1995 respectively. Elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2015. Wang Fangding: Radiochemist. Mainly engaged in chemical and process research on long-lived fission product elements in nuclear fuel reprocessing. Born on December 21, 1928, in Shenyang, Liaoning. Graduated from the Department of Chemical Engineering at Sichuan Institute of Chemical Technology in 1953. In 1991, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Wan Lijun: Physical chemist, mainly engaged in research at the intersection of electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (ECSTM), electrochemistry, and surface science. Born in Dalian, Liaoning, in July 1957. Graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Dalian Institute of Technology in January 1982, obtained a master’s degree from Dalian University of Technology in 1987, and received a doctorate from Tohoku University in Japan in 1996. Elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2009. Zhang Xi: A polymer chemist who primarily focuses on the construction, regulation, and functional study of supramolecular systems. Born in Benxi, Liaoning, in December 1965. Graduated from the Department of Chemistry at Jilin University in 1986, and obtained a master’s and a doctor’s degree from the same university in 1989 and 1992 respectively. Elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2007. Zhao Dongyuan: Physical chemist, mainly engaged in the research on zeolite molecular sieves, the synthesis and structure of nanomeric mesoporous materials, as well as their applications in fields such as catalysis, batteries, and water treatment within the energy sector. Born in Shenyang, Liaoning, in June 1963. Graduated from the Department of Chemistry at Jilin University in 1984, and obtained a master’s and a doctor’s degree from the same university in 1987 and 1990 respectively. Elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2007.
An Lijia from Jilin Province: A polymer physicist who has long been engaged in basic theoretical research in polymer physics. Born in Qianguo County, Jilin Province, in November 1964. Graduated from the Department of Chemistry at Jilin University in 1986, and obtained a Master’s degree in Science as well as a Doctoral degree from Jilin University in 1989 and 1992 respectively. Elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2015. Chen Chunying: Analytical chemist, mainly engaged in protein crown analysis and nanomedicine analysis research. Born in Changchun, Jilin Province, in June 1969. He obtained his bachelor’s degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 1991, and his doctorate from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 1996. In 2023, he was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Chen Xuesi: Chemist who has long been engaged in research on polymer chemistry. Born in Changchun, Jilin Province, in December 1959. He graduated from the Department of Chemistry at Jilin University in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree, obtained a master’s degree from the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry under the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1988, and received a doctor’s degree from Waseda University in Japan in 1993. Elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2019. Chi Lifeng: A physical chemist who mainly engages in research on molecular assembly and reactions at surfaces and interfaces. Born in Changchun, Jilin Province, in October 1957. Graduated from Jilin University in 1982, obtained a master’s degree from the same university in 1985, and received a doctorate from the University of Göttingen in Germany in 1989. Elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2021. Feng Shouhua: Inorganic chemist, mainly engaged in research on the hydrothermal synthesis of inorganic materials. Born in Panshi, Jilin in March 1956. Graduated from the Department of Chemistry at Jilin University in 1978, and obtained a master’s and a doctor’s degree from the same university in 1983 and 1986 respectively. Elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2005. Jiang Lei: Inorganic chemist, mainly engaged in the preparation of biomimetic functional interface materials and the study of their physicochemical properties. Born in Changchun, Jilin, in March 1965. Graduated from the Department of Physics at Jilin University in 1987, obtained a master’s degree from the Department of Chemistry at the same university in 1990, and received a doctorate from Jilin University in 1994. Elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2009. Li Jinghong: Analytical chemist, mainly engaged in research in the fields of electroanalytical chemistry, bioelectrochemistry, single-cell analytical chemistry, and nanoelectrochemistry. Born in Changchun, Jilin Province, in December 1967. He graduated from the Department of Modern Chemistry at the University of Science and Technology of China in 1991, obtaining dual bachelor’s degrees in chemical physics and polymer materials engineering. He received his doctorate from the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry under the University of Science and Technology of China in 1996. Elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2019. Liu Zhongfan: Physical chemist, mainly engaged in research on nanocarbon materials, two-dimensional atomic crystal materials, and nanochemistry. Born in JiuTai City, Jilin Province, in October 1962. Graduated from the Department of Chemical Engineering at Changchun University of Technology in August 1983, obtained a master’s degree from Yokohama National University in Japan in April 1987, and received a doctorate from the University of Tokyo in April 1990. Elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2011. Ma Yuguang: A specialist in organic/polymer optoelectronic materials, primarily engaged in fundamental research on such materials. Born in Changchun, Jilin, in November 1963. Graduated from Jilin University in 1985, and obtained a doctorate from the same university in 1991. Elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2021. Zhang Hongjie: Inorganic chemist who has been engaged in fundamental and applied research on rare earth materials for a long time. Born on September 22, 1953, in Yushu City, Jilin Province. He graduated from the Department of Chemistry at Peking University in 1978, obtained a master’s degree from the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in 1985, and received a doctorate from the First University of Bordeaux in France in 1993. Elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2013.
Sun Licheng from Heilongjiang Province: A physical chemist who mainly focuses on research in the fields of artificial photosynthesis, catalytic water splitting for hydrogen production, as well as advanced science related to solar fuels and solar cells. Born in Dongning City, Heilongjiang Province, in August 1962. Received a Ph.D. from Dalian University of Technology in 1990. Elected an foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2019, and became an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2023.
