1. Product definition Chloroacetonitrile (CAN) is an organic chemical intermediate containing bifunctional groups of cyano group (-CN) and chlorine atom (-Cl). It appears as a colorless and transparent liquid with a pungent odor. It is toxic and sensitive to water and needs to be sealed and stored dry. Its boiling point is about 126-127℃, its melting point is about -38℃, and its density is about 1.193 g/cm³ (25°C), insoluble in water, easily soluble in organic solvents such as alcohol and ether, with both electrophilicity and nucleophilicity, and high reactivity. It is a key raw material for constructing complex organic molecules and is widely used in many fields of fine chemicals. 2. Application fields Chloroacetonitrile is used in three major fields: pesticides, medicines, and dyes. In 2025, the domestic consumption structure accounts for 52%, 30%, and 12% respectively, and the remaining 6% is distributed in the pesticide field such as electronic chemicals and analytical reagents.: It is used to synthesize organophosphorus pesticides, carbamate pesticides and s-triazine nitrogen fertilizer synergists. It is used as a precursor for the introduction of cyano groups and chloromethyl groups to facilitate the research and development of high-efficiency, low-toxicity, low-residue environmentally friendly pesticides and meet the needs of global agricultural green transformation. Medical field: It is used in the synthesis of antibiotics, anti-cancer drugs, and cardiovascular drugs. It provides a functional group conversion pathway for the construction of drug molecules. It can also be used as an analytical reagent for drug development and quality control. Dyes and coatings field: Used in the synthesis of azo dyes and disperse dye intermediates, derivative compounds can improve paint adhesion and weather resistance. other: Gradually expand into emerging fields such as electronic chemicals and functional materials. 3. Production process and technology sources (1) Mainstream production process There are currently two main processes in industrial production, of which the traditional process (ethyl chloroacetate route) accounts for about 35%, and the emerging photochlorination method accounts for about 65%. 1. Traditional process (ethyl chloroacetate route): Using chloroacetic acid and ethanol as raw materials, it is produced through a three-step reaction of esterification, amidation and dehydration. The process is mature but the process is complex, energy consumption is high, there are many by-products and phosphorus-containing wastewater is produced, which puts great pressure on environmental protection (data source: Chloroacetonitrile Industry Production Technology White Paper 2026). 2. Photochlorination method: Using acetonitrile (purity ≥99%) and dry chlorine as raw materials, under the action of ultraviolet light and azobisisobutyronitrile catalyst, the reaction is carried out at about 70°C for 14 hours. The acetonitrile conversion rate can reach 72%-78%. The process is short and there are no obvious "three wastes". It is an efficient and green synthesis route. (2) Source of technology. Early technology mainly relied on imports from Europe, the United States and Japan. Domestic enterprises gradually broke through the core technology through introduction, digestion, absorption and innovation. At present, there are 36 domestic patents related to the photochlorination method, and companies in Shandong, Hubei and other places have achieved industrial production ; The traditional craft technology is mature and domestic enterprises have mastered it, and the overall technical level is in line with international standards. 4. Main manufacturers and production capacity 1. As of the end of 2025, the total global chloroacetonitrile production capacity is approximately 78,000 tons/year, and domestic production capacity is approximately 42,000 tons/year, accounting for 53.8% of the world, mainly concentrated in Shandong, Hubei, and Guangdong. 2. Major domestic manufacturers: Shandong Xuchen Chemical, with an annual production capacity of 5,000 tons ; Maoming City Chuizi, annual production capacity of 4,500 tons ; Kandis Chemical, with a production capacity of 4,000 tons/year ; In addition, there are many small and medium-sized enterprises in Shandong, Jiangsu and other places. The production capacity of a single factory is mostly 1000-3000 tons/year. 3. Major overseas manufacturers: Toray, Japan, has an annual production capacity of 13,000 tons ; BASF in Germany has an annual production capacity of 12,000 tons ; The total production capacity is about 25,000 tons/year, focusing on high-end pharmaceutical and electronic products, accounting for more than 80% of the global high-end market. 5. Product profit 1. The profit of chloroacetonitrile is significantly affected by the price fluctuation of upstream raw materials, and the industry profit fluctuation range is about 15%-20%. 2. Average domestic market price in 2025: Industrial grade 12,800-13,500 yuan/ton, pharmaceutical grade 18,000-20,000 yuan/ton, electronic grade 22,000-25,000 yuan/ton ; The industry average gross profit margin is about 28%-32%, of which industrial-grade gross profit is 3,000-3,800 yuan/ton, pharmaceutical-grade gross profit is 6,000-8,000 yuan/ton, and electronic-grade gross profit is 8,000-10,000 yuan/ton. 6. Market supply and demand 1. In 2025, global chloroacetonitrile production will be approximately 66,000 tons, and apparent consumption will be approximately 63,000 tons. ; Domestic output is about 35,000 tons, apparent consumption is about 33,000 tons, and import dependence is about 8%. The imported products are mainly high-end pharmaceuticals and electronic grades, and the import source countries are mainly Japan and Germany. 2. Supply end: Domestic production capacity is expanding steadily, with 12,000 tons of new production capacity added from 2023 to 2025, mainly photochlorination production capacity, and traditional process production capacity is gradually phased out ; 3.
