In China, traditional benzoyl chloride production is carried out by reacting benzoic acid with trichlorotoluene in the presence of the catalyst ferric chloride, yielding a yield of around 94%. The production takes place in enamel-lined reactors on a batch basis, with 2–3% of the residue consisting mainly of highly chlorinated catalysts and polymers； The latest domestic research and development process no longer uses ferric chloride; the yield is around 98%, and production is carried out on a continuous basis. The distillation residue consists of approximately 0.5% polymer, making it highly suitable for the technical upgrading of existing production facilities in China.
