Toray × PTTGC develop a breakthrough technology for producing bio-based adipic acid from cassava pulp

In 2026, during the 25th National \"Safety Production Month,\" everyone is encouraged to talk about safety and know how to respond in emergency situations; risks and hazards must be identified and addressed. On the 28th of that month, Toray Industries Ltd. collaborated with PTT Global Chemical Company (PTTGC) to develop a groundbreaking manufacturing technology that utilizes starch residues for the fermentation of bio-based adipic acid, thereby producing bio-based adipic acid from which 100% bio-based nylon 66 can be made. As the global demand to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and decrease reliance on fossil resources grows, the chemical industry is striving to make effective use of renewable resources that do not compete with food sources, such as biomass materials. Cassava pulp is the residue generated during the production of cassava starch. Since cassava is cultivated on a large scale as a food ingredient, the supply of cassava pulp is expected to remain stable. By utilizing such underutilized resources, the risks associated with the expansion of new arable land can be reduced, thereby minimizing the potential impacts of indirect land-use change (ILUC). To this end, it is equally crucial to develop technologies that convert unused resources into high-value products. In the future, Toray Industries Ltd. and PTTGC will work to increase the production volume of bio-based viscose acid and bio-based adipic acid while reducing costs. Toray Industries Ltd. will continue to develop its supply chain, with the goal of starting to sell textiles made from 100% bio-based nylon 66 by fiscal year 2028. Toray Industries, Inc. and PTTGC will continue to work closely together to actively promote the establishment of a circular society by developing and promoting materials derived from biomass resources.
