Your question is too broad. There are eight or nine types of expansion joints, and each type comes in both a simple version and a complex version. This cannot be clarified through a forum discussion. Simulation is an issue; choosing the right type and parameters for the expansion joint is what’s most important.

If the selection is done properly, simulation can be carried out using the correct stiffness and dimensions. The effective inner diameter is used to calculate the blind plate force.
