An online analyzer is intended to be installed on the biogas pipeline. The main components of biogas are CH4 at 55%~65% and CO2 at 35%~45%; there are also small amounts of H2S and O2. An online analyzer is now to be installed on the main pipeline to measure the levels of CH4, H2S, and O2. Are there any integrated analyzers available? Or some lower-end analyzer?
Methane and carbon dioxide can be measured using two-component infrared gas analyzers; oxygen can be detected by laser gas analysis or magnetometric oxygen detection; hydrogen sulfide can be analyzed using ultraviolet gas analysis or electrochemical methods. For laboratory analysis, chromatography can be used to detect methane, carbon dioxide, and oxygen; hydrogen sulfide can be detected using absorption-titration methods. It’s not practical to analyze all these components at the same time, but there is still a method available, namely mass spectrometry. However, mass spectrometry instruments are quite expensive.
For online analysis, an NDIR infrared analyzer for methane is sufficient; for hydrogen sulfide, electrochemical methods are used. As for oxygen, it’s not clear what its concentration is, so electrochemical methods are likely the most suitable option.
