Since wastewater (especially chemical wastewater) contains large amounts of chemicals and heavy metals, when such wastewater enters the biological treatment tank, it inevitably has an effect on the activated sludge and microorganisms; in mild cases this inhibits their growth, while in severe cases it kills the activated sludge or microorganisms. As a result, wastewater treatment plants will have to re-culture the sludge, and the inability to treat or discharge wastewater will affect production. To avoid such situations, most countries abroad install online biological toxicity analysis instruments at the inlet of wastewater treatment plants to monitor the toxicity of the wastewater in advance, thereby preventing the death of activated sludge/microorganisms. The following is an introduction to online toxicity analyzers. The online toxicity analyzer Nitritox can measure the toxicity of surface water, drinking water, and wastewater by using nitrobacteria or the activated sludge from customer wastewater treatment plants, thereby enabling water quality monitoring and process control. It is also used to monitor the occurrence of toxic incidents and to trigger alarms. Measurement principle: The instrument first measures the respiration rate of nitrifying bacteria/activated sludge from the customer’s wastewater treatment plant in ultrapure water. It then adds these nitrifying bacteria/activated sludge to the wastewater sample and measures their respiration rate there. If chemical substances and heavy metals are present in the sample, they will inhibit the respiration rate of the nitrifying bacteria/activated sludge, indicating that the sample is toxic. Since different concentrations of wastewater have varying inhibitory effects on nitrifying bacteria/activated sludge, we can thus distinguish between the levels of toxicity. This testing system includes highly sensitive, self-reproducing fungal cultures that can be regenerated continuously without the need for further purchases; it can complete tests within 5 minutes and is used continuously to test for toxicity in water samples.
