An electromagnetic flowmeter consists of a sensor and a converter. It operates based on Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction and is used to measure the volumetric flow rate of conductive liquids with a conductivity greater than 5 μS/cm; it is an inductive instrument for measuring the volumetric flow rate of conductive media. In addition to measuring the volumetric flow rate of ordinary conductive liquids, it can also be used to measure the volumetric flow rate of highly corrosive liquids such as strong acids and strong bases, as well as uniform liquid-solid two-phase suspensions like sludge, pulp, and paper pulp. Electromagnetic flowmeters are widely used in various industrial sectors such as petroleum, chemicals, metallurgy, light textiles, papermaking, environmental protection, and food processing, as well as in areas like municipal management, water conservancy construction, and river dredging, for flow measurement. Under normal circumstances, the protection rating of electromagnetic flowmeters is IP65. According to **standard GB4208-84 and the International Electrotechnical Commission standard IEC529-76 regarding the protection ratings for the enclosures of electrical and electronic products: A. IP65: This rating indicates protection against water spray; the sensor enclosure of an electromagnetic flowmeter can withstand water sprayed at it from any direction using a faucet, with a water pressure of 30 Kpa, a flow rate of 12.5 L/S, and a distance of 3 meters. B. IP67: The sensor of the electromagnetic flowmeter can be immersed in water for a short period of time. C. IP68: It is designed for use underwater; it can operate in water or underground under certain pressures over extended periods. In this case, the sensor and the display unit of the electromagnetic flowmeter are separated, resulting in a split-type electromagnetic flowmeter. It is important to note the protection rating requirements for such electromagnetic flowmeters. Under normal circumstances, the protection rating should be chosen based on the actual conditions. If the sensor is to be installed below the ground level in areas prone to flooding, an IP68 rating is appropriate; whereas if it is installed above the ground level, IP65 or IP67 ratings are suitable. Under no circumstances should the display area of an electromagnetic flowmeter be exposed to water or flooded, as this can cause damage to the flowmeter.
The protection rating is IP65; don’t just say it’s waterproof – also mention its dustproof capabilities.
If I remember correctly, IP68 does not allow for permanent operation underwater; it can only function properly in water under certain pressure for a limited period of time.
