I have a question for everyone: I found in the explosion-proof area that ordinary waterproof junction boxes were being used to house thermal resistors/thermocouples, which were then connected directly to the DCS RTD card. Is this in compliance with the regulations? Are explosion-proof thermal resistors/thermocouples required, and is corrective action needed? If there are any regulations or standards, please share them. Thank you. :)

Thermocouples and thermal resistors are generally intrinsically safe measuring elements that do not require certification; however, if they are located in an intrinsically safe area, they must pass through a P+F safety barrier before they can be connected to a DCS system.

Was there a reply saying that the junction box needs to be explosion-proof? I’m not sure anymore – does a intrinsically safe system not require an explosion-proof junction box?
