Does concentrated acetic acid at 100 degrees Celsius corrode 316L stainless steel?
When in contact with acetic acid, stainless steels such as 316L, 1Gr18Ni9Ti, and 304 show little corrosion at room temperature. However, using these stainless steels as storage tanks for 99.85% acetic acid over an extended period can cause the color of the product to turn reddish; among them, 304-based tanks result in the worst coloration. As the acetic acid concentration decreases, the color of the acetic acid inside the stainless steel tanks deepens. Yet at a temperature of around 100 degrees, when the acetic acid concentration is between 15% and 25%, corrosion of the stainless steel becomes significant.
I remember that for an accident tank in a project, 316L was used for the temperature gauge sleeve, and the sleeve corroded and leaked when the temperature was raised to near 100°C. It is recommended to be more cautious; is Hastelloy a better choice?
Dual-phase steel could be considered; its price is somewhat more affordable~

At room temperature, the corrosion of 316L by acetic acid is not very significant; stainless steel 316L is used for measuring acetic acid with a concentration of 99% in acetic acid plants. However, high-temperature corrosion is severe, so measurements need to be taken after cooling down. But note that acetic acid crystallizes at 16.9°C. Acetic acid is the raw material in our factory. The boiling point of acetic acid is 117.9 degrees Celsius; for acetic acid at temperatures between 100 and 118 degrees Celsius, we use 316L pipes and storage tanks, as well as reactors. These materials can be used for 9 years without any problems, with almost no corrosion occurring. Only in some parts where instruments come into contact with the liquid is duplex steel used (due to its high cost)
