The original manual operations will gradually be replaced by PLC and DCS control; what’s important is to combine process considerations with control mechanisms in order to develop appropriate control algorithms and strategies. Furthermore, in fine chemical manufacturing, there are many situations where it is difficult to measure and determine when a reaction has completed, and appropriate solutions are needed for these issues. Of course, cost-effectiveness also needs to be taken into account, as it is one of the key factors in whether true process automation can be achieved. Many of the projects we work on involve small enterprises gradually replacing some manual tasks; under the context of a unified national approach to safety and environmental protection, this will naturally encourage enterprises to consider adopting automated production methods.

Based on my experience with several fine chemical plants, over the past three years there has been a complete shift from manual control to automation; DCS and PLC systems are widely used. In the past, a plant might have around 100 employees, but now that number has been reduced to 15, with most of the work requiring only monitoring from a control room. Of course, the amount of money and labor invested in such modifications is quite substantial, but the rewards are worth it. The purity level has risen from around 95% to 99% at present; as a result, the product’s value increases while its price decreases. Labor costs and overall expenses are reduced as well, so automation is undoubtedly the direction in which the fine chemical industry will develop in the future.
