As shown in the figure above, a pressure transmitter’s nameplate indicates that the sensor’s range is -14.7 to 50 PSI, which corresponds to -101 kPa to 350 kPa. The range calibrated by the manufacturer is 0 to 138 kPa, while the user-defined range (as specified in the construction drawing data sheet) is 0 to 0.01 MPa. Why doesn’t the manufacturer calibrate the sensor over its full range, but only up to 138 kPa? If my measurement range becomes 0 to 0.2 MPa, although this falls within the sensor’s range, it still cannot be used directly after instrument configuration. Does the user need to calibrate the range themselves?
The range calibrated by the manufacturer, that is, the range calibrated at the time of production, is usually a requirement specified by the user at the time of purchase. When buying a transmitter, you indicate the range you need; in fact, this is merely a calibration range, and there’s no need to worry too much about it. Your range can be modified as desired, as long as it stays within the sensor’s capacity. You need to use a handheld device to make these changes.
I agree with the view on the second floor; that’s exactly the case – as long as it remains within the range of the sensor’s measurement, no further calibration is necessary. For instruments in new projects, the pressure transmitters must have calibration records, as this is related to project acceptance procedures.
