MODBUS and OPC communication

Many units on site use MODBUS for communication, while the programs used for controlling the higher-level systems generally employ OPC for communication. What are the differences between the two? What are the characteristics of their use? Are there any safe and reliable methods or software that can convert MODBUS data into OPC format?

Modbus is generally used for data transmission and reception between various communication modules, whereas OPC relies on a host computer to transfer data; thus, OPC depends on the host computer. Adding more nodes increases the likelihood of failures, but the advantage is that configuration may be more intuitive and compatibility is better, with no need for dedicated communication modules. If you have an OPC server that can connect to various controllers, then you can set up OPC.
