In the pharmaceutical industry, automation is used for things such as controlling the temperature of reaction vessels, maintaining pressure differences in rooms, and transporting liquids. Although a lot of automation is employed, it often seems that automation isn’t necessary in many cases, and manual control is preferred instead; the automation system isn’t precise enough. Is there any better solution?

It’s not possible to ensure that the components of the material inside the reactor are completely consistent, right? So it’s possible that the temperature needs a slight adjustment ; If the temperature is difficult to control, it becomes hard to keep the fluid stable; by the time it finally stabilizes, the reaction is almost complete! This is a serious issue; it’s quite tedious to spend a lot of effort adjusting the parameters, so I simply adjusted them manually!
Increase automation, enable batch control, manage each step carefully, pay attention to every detail; proper equipment and accurate instruments are necessary. Every single detail and step involved is clearly explained in the process technical specifications (for example, the temperature and pressure set for each small step during the process are different, as are the alarms); in fact, automation can be achieved through a combination of equipment, technology, and software.

In the design phase of many projects, the operating conditions under full-load, stable operation of the equipment are taken as a reference, and automatic control systems are designed accordingly; therefore, once operational conditions change or the specified design conditions are not met after the project is put into operation, it becomes difficult to enable automatic operation. To address such problems, it is necessary to take a comprehensive approach to the operating conditions that the device will face from the outset of design, increase investment in automatic control instruments, and develop more sophisticated control logic. Otherwise, part of the control has to be handed over to humans to handle. There is no problem that cannot be solved; the key is cost-effectiveness.
