Serial port servers provide the function of converting serial ports to network interfaces; they can transform RS-232/485/422 serial ports into TCP/IP network interfaces, enabling bidirectional and transparent data transmission between RS-232/485/422 serial ports and TCP/IP network interfaces, or supporting bidirectional transmission over the MODBUS protocol. OPC is software-to-software, while a serial port server is protocol-to-protocol (in other words, it handles hardware interface conversion). When OPC is involved, there are usually TCP/IP interfaces available for communication; serial ports are less likely to be used, as serial communication over cables is slower and has a lower bandwidth compared to network communication using twisted pair cables.
