How to calculate the total power consumption of a DCS control cabinet? Based on the power modules inside the cabinet, or what else?
The circuit breaker for the power supply input definitely has a large margin of safety. If you want to determine the actual energy consumption, you’ll need to calculate the power of each component individually, and then take into account factors such as the simultaneous operation factor and the load factor – which makes it quite complicated~
Regarding the total power consumption of the DCS control cabinet, it should be noted first that the DCS cabinet does not have its own power supply; it relies on external power supply. The DCS cabinet only has an incoming power switch, and using the capacity of this switch to determine the system’s power consumption would result in an exaggerated figure. In practice, it is necessary to calculate based on the specific power consumption of your DCS system. First, you need to determine what loads the DCS supports; generally, in addition to powering ordinary cabinets, some 220V instruments may also draw power from the DCS, and all of these needs to be taken into account. As for cabinet power supply, the number of safety barriers and clips per cabinet is fixed; this is known when configuring the DCS, and it is possible to estimate the power consumption of each cabinet (it’s fine to estimate it slightly higher if accuracy isn’t critical). In short, you just need to calculate it based on the actual power consumption of your cabinet!
Consult the manufacturer, who will calculate the load for you based on the type and quantity of measurement points (the coefficients vary for each type of measurement point). For a device that is already in operation, simply use a clamp meter to measure the current and do the calculation yourself.
