The Control Room Design Specification SH3006 specifies requirements regarding air quality; is it necessary to install relevant gas detectors for this purpose? Are there any relevant testing measures within the HVAC system?
In the fresh air systems of control rooms or cabinet areas, oxygen and hydrogen sulfide alarms are installed at the inlet.
If it is a control room with blast-resistant structure, cooling equipment and central air conditioning must be installed, as well as fresh air handling units. Primary and medium-efficiency filters should be fitted in both the indoor units of these air conditioning systems and the fresh air handling units for filtering purposes. However, some toxic gases cannot be filtered out; therefore, toxic gas detectors need to be installed at the fresh air inlet of the fresh air handling units (outside). If combustible gases are present, combustible gas detectors are also required. These detectors are connected to the fresh air handling units of the air conditioning system, and in the event of an alarm, the fresh air handling units will automatically shut down to prevent toxic or combustible gases from entering the control room. There is also a fire protection feature that connects to the air conditioning system – for example, if a fire alarm is triggered, the central air conditioning will be stopped, as keeping the air conditioning running in case of a fire could spread the fire through the air ducts to other rooms. It’s more or less this idea: toxic/flammable gas detectors are necessary, but they cannot ensure that the indoor air is clean; they only serve as an alarm system.
What types of gases can the combustible and toxic gas detectors in new air handling systems detect? It should be related to the gases that might be drawn in through the fresh air intake in the control room, such as leaks of flammable or toxic gases generated by devices located near the control room.
Of course, it depends on the manufacturing process. For example, if your production equipment is capable of producing CO, then toxic CO will be used; if benzene is present, then benzene-based toxins will be utilized. It’s definitely determined based on the environment surrounding you

Use the gas detector appropriate for the gases present in your environment; if there is no chlorine, what’s the purpose of installing a chlorine detector? The standards require that the composition of your gases be in compliance; these standards are fixed and do not cover all aspects. If I were a company that produces benzene, then none of the three gases mentioned – hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, and chlorine – would meet the required standards, and it is necessary to install benzene detectors
