The design specifications for chemical process control rooms state that a ceiling should be installed in such rooms. It’s intuitive to think that the ceiling is there for aesthetic reasons, but the use of the word “should” in these specifications makes one wonder if there are other functional reasons as well for installing a ceiling I wonder if any of my colleagues work in power plants? I couldn’t find this requirement in the power plant specifications; I’m not sure whether it’s just that I didn’t find it or indeed there is no such requirement.
It is preferable to use non-flammable lightweight materials with a anti-detachment structure. This aspect should be considered as the primary factor, with aesthetics being secondary, for reference only.
Aesthetics of the ceiling is one aspect; many things also need to be hidden within it, such as lighting systems, fire protection pipes, ventilation ducts, various valves, and even some network connections for indoor controls – things like network cables and power cords required for surveillance systems. There are many such elements, and especially in control rooms used in chemical industries, a structure that can withstand impacts is necessary, as there are no windows. In such cases, there are numerous ventilation ducts, as well as air conditioning systems and fire exhaust systems along with lighting. If no ceiling is used, then the pipes must be installed beforehand within the building structure, and making changes later on is very troublesome. Additionally, in a building, there are often many beams, especially if the control room is large; these beams end up exposed and painted white, which looks extremely unsightly
