In general design, the signal cables for instruments are multi-strand flexible cables, while single-core rigid cables are typically used for DI/DO points such as solenoids. Are there any guidelines I can refer to for this?
We did not adopt this approach; I can’t explain the necessity for it. It's sufficient to use multiple strands of soft copper wire
Soft wires are usually woven copper wires, while hard wires are typically single-core. It has been observed that soft wires tend to develop burrs at their joints, which can lead to short circuits. We generally use single-core hard wires for single pairs, and woven copper-core soft cables for multiple pairs; otherwise, the cables become too rigid and difficult to work with when there are multiple pairs
