Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) Product lifecycle management refers to the process of managing and controlling product-related data and information throughout the entire life cycle of a product, from its conception to its retirement. A PLM system provides a centralized platform for coordinating and tracking activities related to product design, process planning, manufacturing, and services. It enables different departments and teams to share and collaborate, improving the efficiency and quality of product development. In digital factories, PLM systems work closely with other systems to ensure a seamless connection between the product design and manufacturing processes, while providing comprehensive product lifecycle management capabilities. II. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) An ERP system is a comprehensive management platform used to integrate and manage data and information from various departments and business processes within an enterprise. It covers areas such as supply chain management, financial management, and human resource management, enabling companies to achieve effective allocation and management of resources. In digital factories, ERP systems serve to integrate various business systems, providing a holistic view of data and decision-making support. This helps enterprises coordinate their production planning and optimize the allocation of resources. III. Manufacturing Execution System (MES) The MES system is a system used to manage and control the production process. It connects the planning and execution layers of enterprises, enabling real-time monitoring and scheduling of production activities to ensure the smooth implementation of production plans. The MES system can track and record key data throughout the production process, such as production volume, production progress, quality parameters, and equipment OEE. It also provides real-time feedback and reports. In a digital factory, the MES system is closely integrated with PLM and ERP systems, enabling seamless coordination from order management to production execution, thereby enhancing both production efficiency and product quality. IV. Warehouse Management System (WMS) The Warehouse Management System is a system used to manage and optimize warehouse operations. It is responsible for tasks such as warehouse storage, inventory management, and goods tracking. The WMS system improves logistics efficiency and accuracy by optimizing warehouse layout, inventory management, and delivery processes. In digital factories, the WMS system is integrated with other systems, enabling seamless coordination from material procurement to production delivery, thereby reducing inventory costs and delivery times. V. Distributed Control System (DCS) A Distributed Control System is a system used to monitor and control automated equipment in factories. It consists of a series of sensors, actuators, and controllers located throughout the factory, which collect and process production data in real time, and carry out automatic control based on predetermined rules and algorithms. The DCS system can automate the factory production process, improving production efficiency and product quality. In digital factories, the DCS system is tightly integrated with MES and WMS systems, enabling comprehensive monitoring and control of production equipment. Among these five types of factory software systems, for discrete small and medium-sized enterprises, the first ones to be considered should be ERP and MES systems. The ERP system enables management of various aspects such as orders, plans, materials, and finances across the entire factory, and it belongs to the upper-level management system ; The MES system is a production process management system that encompasses various aspects of the production process, including workshop planning, material receipt, progress reporting, quality inspection, equipment management, warehousing, traceability, and abnormality handling. It can integrate seamlessly with ERP systems to ensure transparency throughout the production process. Small and medium-sized discrete manufacturing enterprises are generally engaged in contract manufacturing and assembly; they rarely engage in the independent research and development of products. As for automation equipment, these enterprises mainly use small processing machines or custom assembly equipment. Warehouse management in such enterprises is also simple, focusing on product receipt, inventory counting, and shipment. Therefore, enterprises can choose a factory management system that best suits their actual production model.

It consists of sensors, actuators, and controllers distributed throughout the factory, which collect and process production data in real time, and perform automatic control based on predefined rules and algorithms. In general, the purpose of these five systems is to improve production efficiency and product quality, reduce production costs, and enhance a company’s competitiveness. Depending on the actual situation, enterprises can choose a factory management system that suits them. .
MES, WES, etc. are mainly used in the discrete manufacturing industry, while the chemical industry belongs to the process industry and relies primarily on control systems such as DCS, SIS, FCS, PLC, CCS, GDS, etc.; MES is not suitable for the chemical industry.
Many of the chemical engineering projects we design these days come equipped with MES systems.

What is its relationship with DCS, PLC, etc.? Is it through OPC communication via the host computer, or through protocols such as Modbus CTU/TCP or Profinet?
