During the last night shift, I had to deal with two issues at the same time: one cylinder was stuck, and another valve wouldn’t move. Realizing that I didn’t have a multimeter with me, I went to the site together with a colleague. Upon arriving, I saw that the display on the cylinder was completely dark; it was a frustrating situation. The cylinder was located on the fourth level of the framework, so we returned to the cabinet room and tried using another circuit to power it – there was some indication of activity, but the cause of the problem wasn’t clear. We then moved on to the next issue: a two-position cylinder valve wouldn’t operate. After the DCS sent a signal, the air control valves and exhaust valves before the cylinder didn’t function properly. After replacing those components, the valve still wouldn’t move. With no other choice, we went back to get a multimeter. We checked and found that the electromagnetic valve at the front end wasn’t receiving any power. We then went to the cabinet room to investigate further, and discovered that it was a problem with the process logic – the PLC wasn’t sending out the necessary power signals. Once those conditions were met, the valve started working properly. The meter was taken to the sinker tank to confirm that no power was being supplied; the safety barrier had poor contact, so it was reconnected, and the sinker tank was functioning normally on site. We were busy with those two tasks for over two hours; not having a watch cost us a lot of time. I’ll remember this in the future and bring a multimeter when working
