Inside that large disc, there is a diaphragm; compressed air can enter at two places: one from above and one from below. Air enters from above; once compressed air arrives, the diaphragm moves downward, pushing the valve stem downward to close the valve. If there is no signal and no air supply, the valve remains fully open. If a signal is present and compressed air is supplied from below, the diaphragm moves upward, which in turn drives the valve stem upward and opens the valve; when there is no signal, the valve remains fully closed.
