I would like to ask how to choose calibration gases for combustible gas and toxic gas detection? Why calibrate? Is the selection of primary and secondary alarm values related to this? I really don’t get it; could fellow professionals please explain it to me?
The calibration of combustible gas and toxic gas detectors is intended to ensure detection precision and accuracy. The calibration gas should be the same as the target gas to be monitored, or have similar physical and chemical properties. The main reason for calibration is that detector elements may experience performance changes over time due to factors such as aging and environmental variations during use. Calibration can correct these deviations to ensure the accuracy of the measurement results. The setting of primary and secondary alarm values is closely related to calibration, as they are determined based on the calibrated detection results. These two alarm values are typically determined based on safety standards or company policies, and are used to issue alerts when gas concentrations reach potentially dangerous levels, thereby ensuring the safety of the workplace. .
The problem I’m facing is detecting diesel. Experts suggest using calibration gases, and I found online that some say methane should be used while others recommend n-hexane. If these two gases are used for calibration, I wonder whether the alarm settings cannot be set at 25% LEL and 50% LEL; instead, they should be set at lower values to avoid issues. Of course, I’m not sure whether the values will be too high or too low, or if it has anything to do with this at all.
