Based on the frequency of the radar waves emitted, they can be divided into high-frequency radar and low-frequency radar. High-frequency microwaves with frequencies above 20 GHz, emitted by high-frequency radar, have wavelengths that are much shorter than those of radar waves in other frequency bands, as can be determined from the wave property: speed = wavelength * frequency. The wavelength of 24 GHz high-frequency microwaves is significantly shorter than that of radar waves in other frequency ranges. Generally speaking, the surface of a solid material is inclined and rough; shorter wavelengths can ensure that the radar waves emitted are reflected back to the radar probe to a large extent on such a rough solid surface. Therefore, high-frequency radar is mainly used for measurements in solid media and long-range applications. Low-frequency radar emits microwaves with frequencies ranging from 100 MHz to 6 MHz, and is primarily used for measurements in liquid media and in applications requiring a short measurement range. Compared to low-frequency radar, high-frequency radar has the following advantages: 1) High-frequency level gauges (mainly those operating at 26GHz and 24GHz) feature high energy, a small beam angle (the beam angle of a horn antenna with a diameter of Φ95 is 8°, while that of a 6GHz low-frequency pulse radar horn antenna with a diameter of Φ246 is 15°), smaller antenna sizes, and higher accuracy. 2) The wavelength of a 26GHz radar is 11 mm, while that of a 6GHz radar is 50 mm. When using radars to measure the level of bulk materials, the reflection of radar waves comes mainly from diffuse reflection from the surface of the material. The intensity of this diffuse reflection is proportional to the size of the material and inversely proportional to the wavelength. Since the diameter of most bulk materials is much smaller than 50 mm, this is why 26GHz radars are currently the preferred choice for measuring the level of such materials. 3) In applications involving small containers with low diameters and heights, the long length of 6GHz radar antennas (300–400 mm) inadvertently increases the blind zone to around 600 mm. Due to the poor directivity of 6GHz radars (large opening angle), multipath reflections occur within such small containers. 26GHz radars, on the other hand, operate at a higher frequency, have shorter antennas, and exhibit better directivity, thereby overcoming the shortcomings of 6GHz radars and making them suitable for measuring small containers. 4) Due to the harsh on-site environment, over time, dirt, moisture, and other substances accumulate on radar antennas. The antenna of the 26GHz radar level gauge is small, so installing an antenna cover can significantly reduce the impact of dirt and moisture; whereas the antenna of the 6GHz radar is large, making it difficult to fit an antenna cover. Moreover, the instrument is heavy and difficult to clean. 5) Due to the good directivity of 26GHz radar level gauges, in many harsh operating conditions, the radar can be installed outside the container for measurement through simple isolation. 6) The maximum range of high-frequency radar level gauges can reach 70 meters, whereas that of low-frequency radar level gauges is 35 meters.
