The guided wave radar level meter is a high-precision level measurement instrument based on the principle of time domain reflectometry (TDR, Time Domain Reflectometry). It achieves precise measurement of level by emitting microwave pulses that propagate along the probe and analyzing the reflected echo generated on the surface of the medium. With its excellent measurement performance, especially in complex working conditions such as stirring, high temperature, high pressure, large steam, highly corrosive media, and easy scarring in tanks, guided wave radar level meters are playing an increasingly important role in modern industrial production. From early float level meters to today's guided wave radar level meters, level measurement technology has gone through many important iterations of innovation, and each technological leap has significantly improved the performance and scope of application of the instrument. The following will introduce the working principle and application of guided wave radar level meter in detail. The core working principle of guided wave radar level meter is based on the principle of time domain reflection (TDR). A microwave generator within the instrument generates a low-energy radar pulse that travels at the speed of light down a probe (such as a steel cable or rigid rod) immersed in the medium. When the pulse propagates to the end of the probe and contacts the surface of the measured medium (liquid or solid), since the air (or gas) and the measured medium have significantly different dielectric properties, the probe impedance will mutate at this interface, thus generating a reflected pulse. This reflected pulse, which carries the level information, then returns along the original path of the probe and is received by the instrument's electronics. By accurately calculating the time difference from transmitting the pulse to receiving the reflected pulse, and combining it with the known pulse propagation speed, the distance from the end of the probe to the medium surface can be accurately calculated, and then the actual level in the tank can be obtained. It is worth mentioning that for a medium with good conductivity (such as water-based liquid), the liquid surface will produce a very strong reflected pulse. For media with low dielectric constant and poor conductivity (such as some oils, organic solvents, etc.), the reflected signal generated by the surface is relatively weak, and part of the radar wave energy will continue to propagate downward along the probe. This remaining energy will be completely reflected back when it propagates to a highly conductive medium (such as the water layer at the bottom of the tank or the highly conductive medium itself). Using this characteristic, the guided wave radar level meter can measure the position of the interface between two different liquids (such as the oil-water interface).
