Differences between DCS and SIS

Our plant is equipped with both DCS and SIS. What is the difference between DCS and SIS? Why is it designed this way? I hope fellow sailors can help answer this!
DCS -- distribution control system: a distributed control system that is used for factory control at the operational level; it handles routine data collection as well as device control. SIS--Safety Instrumented System: a type of interlock system used for providing safety protection and control for process equipment in factories; it sometimes also includes safety protection and control for entire units. DCS is for control, SIS is for protection.
