It was reported recently that Clariant, a specialty chemicals company focused on sustainable development, announced today the signing of a strategic partnership agreement with Shanghai Boiler Factory. This collaboration stems from the successful partnership between the two parties in Shanghai Electric’s biomass-based green methanol project in Taonan, Jilin. In addition to supplying the MegaMax catalyst, Clariant also provided on-site technical support during the successful commissioning of this plant with an annual production capacity of 50,000 tons. Phase 2 of this project is planned to produce 200,000 tons of green methanol and 10,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel per year, with operations set to begin in 2027. The first phase of the Shanghai Electric Taonan project involves the construction of wind turbines with a capacity of 67.2 MW, as well as systems for producing hydrogen through water electrolysis at a rate of 8,200 Nm3/h (using both alkaline and PEM methods). The project also incorporates a biomass gasification process to produce 50,000 tons of green methanol per year. It makes use of key technologies such as pure-oxygen pressurized biomass fluidized-bed gasification, CO2-enriched methanol synthesis, wind power-based hydrogen production with weak grid connection, and flexible chemical process control systems. It will go into official operation on July 14, 2025.
