On September 11, the Air Liquide Green Methanol and Air Separation Production Base project of Air Liquide (Qingdao) Co., Ltd. was approved for registration. Project number: 2509-370211-04-01-849130. On August 28, 2024, during the Qingdao Summit for Multinational Company Leaders, the French company Air Liquide officially signed an agreement for the first phase of a project aimed at producing 300,000 tons of biomass methanol per year. It is reported that this is Air Liquide’s first green methanol project in China. This project was introduced by the Investment Promotion Center of Qingdao West Coast New Area. It utilizes biomass resources such as straw to produce green methanol, which is then shipped by sea to key domestic ports and markets around the world. Once completed, this project will help the new area achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality, bringing significant economic and social benefits. Air Liquide is a world-leading supplier of industrial gases, holding numerous advantages in the field of green methanol technology. Full-chain biomass-based green methanol production technology: Air Liquide adopts the biomass-based green methanol approach, which offers advantages such as high efficiency, a low carbon footprint, and clear patents and intellectual property rights. Compared to traditional coal-based methanol, this method can reduce the carbon footprint of the resulting product by over 90%, and it also enables an increased use of renewable energy sources on-site as needed. Other green methanol projects in which Air Liquide is involved in China include: on the morning of January 23, the Dafeng Port Economic Development Zone, Huanghai Financial Holding Group, together with Air Liquide, Guoneng Bioenergy, and Meijin Energy, held a signing ceremony for the “Biomass-to-Biogas Green Methanol Project” in Yancheng. This time, Air Liquide, Guoneng Bioenergy, and Meijin Energy have joined forces with Huanghai Financial Holding Group to collaborate in Dafeng on the development of a green methanol project based on biomass for biogas production. Once the project is completed and put into operation, it is planned to produce 180 million cubic meters of green biogas and 120,000 tons of green methanol annually. This will not only enable the effective utilization of biomass energy and achieve integration between production and consumption but also address the problem of rural non-point source pollution caused by livestock farming.
