Recently, some market experts have said that 2025 has become the year of the breakthrough for electronic methanol; this technology has finally moved from pilot and small-scale projects to the stage of the commissioning of the first commercial plants. Electronic methanol – this clean fuel designed to help the transportation and chemical industries achieve decarbonization – is set to experience rapid growth in the global market. Electronic methanol has existed for decades. Electronic methanol relies on renewable energy electricity as its main driving force, and by combining carbon dioxide capture technology, it converts water and carbon dioxide into methanol, thereby enabling the recycling of carbon resources. Its synthesis involves three key technical steps: hydrogen production through water electrolysis, carbon dioxide capture, and catalytic methanol synthesis, and it requires a high level of stability from renewable energy sources as well as high efficiency in the electrolysis equipment. If green electricity is used throughout its production process and carbon dioxide is captured efficiently, carbon neutrality or even negative emissions can be achieved. Moreover, this product has a high purity, making it suitable for high-precision applications such as fuel cells that are sensitive to impurities. The shipping industry has been an early adopter of green methanol; currently, over 60 ships capable of using methanol as fuel are in operation, with another 300 ships on order. Approximately 20 ports around the world have the capability to supply methanol. The chemical industry accounts for nearly 70% of global methanol consumption and is the main consumer of green methanol. In 2024, about 35% of green methanol was used in the chemical industry. Of the world’s top 100 chemical manufacturers, more than 70 have committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, highlighting the growth potential of green methanol in this sector. In the aviation sector, synthetic methanol can theoretically serve as a precursor for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and companies such as ExxonMobil are working on the development of related technologies. Although biofuels still dominate this field at present, as production capacity expands, aviation fuel produced from methanol is expected to become a potential market for future electronic methanol. While demand is growing healthily, the world’s first commercial-scale electronic methanol plants have also been put into operation one after another. On May 13, 2025, the world’s first commercial-scale electronic methanol plant was officially put into operation in Korsør, Denmark. The factory has an annual production capacity of 42,000 tons, and its clients include companies such as Maersk and Novo Nordisk. The project uses electricity from nearby solar power plants for electrolysis, and obtains bio-based carbon dioxide from local biogas plants. Just two months later, the world’s second electronic methanol plant came online in China. Located in Taonan City, Jilin Province, this project was constructed by Shanghai Electric; it generates electricity from wind power to power electrolysis, and produces electronic methanol through biomass conversion. The annual production capacity of Phase 1 is 50,000 tons, with Phase 2 aiming to increase this capacity to 250,000 tons per year. Market experts believe that these two projects are merely the beginning of the development of the electronic methanol industry. Although the field of electronic methanol is full of opportunities and has made significant progress, there is still a long way to go before it can truly become mainstream. Firstly, the cost of electronic methanol remains less competitive compared to methanol derived from fossil fuels. Although the price of e-methanol is declining, as of 2024, it remains two to three times more expensive than fossil-based methanol. However, with the scaling up of the industry, a significant price drop is expected. Furthermore, relevant regulations implemented by the EU and other regions have increased the cost of using petroleum-based fuels, which will also indirectly enhance the competitiveness of electronic methanol. In addition to overcoming economic challenges, the development of electronic methanol also faces difficulties within the broader context of investment in clean energy. For example, energy giants are scaling back or adjusting their commitments in this field; the most notable case is Worx Energy’s cancellation of the FlagshipONE project in 2024 due to lower-than-expected demand growth, as well as the United States’ cancellation of billions of dollars in subsidies for clean energy – all of which have an impact on the development of electronic methanol.
