Xintian Coal Chemical: Successful first start-up of regenerative thermal oxidation unit after maintenance Author/Source: Zhejiang Energy Xintian Coal Chemical Date: 2020-07-10 Clicks: 12 On July 7, the regenerative thermal oxidation unit at Xintian Coal Chemical was successfully started up for the first time after maintenance, laying a solid foundation for the company to achieve its overall environmental goals of \"zero emissions in chemical production and zero pollution in green development.\" The regenerative thermal oxidation unit (RTO unit) at Xintian Coal Chemical Industry is currently the largest facility in China for treating volatile organic compounds; it is capable of processing 720,000 cubic meters of waste gas per hour. It represents the first RTO unit of its kind in China’s coal chemical industry. Its function is to treat the exhaust gases from low-temperature methanol washing units, carbon dioxide-containing gases, and wastewater treatment plant emissions. Meanwhile, it generates steam at 1.5 megapascals, enabling the comprehensive utilization of these waste gases and thereby reducing pollutant emissions and preventing environmental contamination. To ensure the smooth commissioning of this regenerative thermal oxidation unit, the purification workshop at Xintian Coal Chemical Industry made thorough preparations. Despite the limited time available for maintenance work and the heavy workload, the workshop organized everything carefully. It carried out maintenance tasks, provided safety training, and identified potential hazards, adopting a highly responsible attitude and applying high standards, quality requirements, and strict oversight to each task, thereby completing all maintenance projects on time and to the required standard. On the afternoon of July 7, the management of the company’s purification workshop provided on-site guidance for starting up the equipment. As the ignition button for burner No. 1 was pressed, an image of the flame from RTO No. 1 appeared on the DCS system of the regenerative thermal oxidation unit; the personnel monitoring RTO No. 1 observed the flame, which indicated that the burner had been successfully ignited. The operator then pressed the buttons for burners 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6; corresponding flame images appeared on the DCS, and flames were visible through the observation ports of the RTO furnaces on site. Thus, all 6 RTO units were successfully ignited, achieving the overall goal of \"no accidents during maintenance, green maintenance practices, and successful operation on the first attempt.\" Once in operation, the regenerative thermal oxidation unit will fully treat the exhaust gases generated by low-temperature methanol washing processes as well as the waste gases from the biochemical tanks; this will eliminate the problem of these exhaust gases being released directly into the atmosphere. It will help to reduce industrial odors, achieve zero emissions and zero pollution, and thereby improve the level of clean energy production at Yili Xintian Coal Chemical Company, maximizing social, environmental, and economic benefits
