Recently, Inner Mongolia 3D New Materials Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Zhejiang 3D Rubber Products Co., Ltd., has been making steady progress in the development of this integrated project for producing 900,000 tons per year of BDO and biodegradable plastics in Wuhai. The project has been approved by the Development and Reform Commission of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and the energy consumption targets for Phase 1 of the project have been established, allowing for the commencement of construction. Phase 1 of the Wuhai project mainly includes 360,000 tons per year of calcium carbide and 300,000 tons per year of BDO, among other things. Subsequent steps will focus on securing the land and advancing approvals such as safety assessments and environmental impact evaluations, with the aim of starting construction as soon as possible. 3D believes that several domestic companies have plans to expand or build new facilities for BDO and PBAT production. Among the various methods for producing BDO, the acetaldehyde route, which involves using calcium carbide to produce acetylene, remains the most economical and efficient method; it is also the dominant approach for current production capacity. However, among those facilities dedicated to BDO production via calcium carbide, only a few companies possess their own supply of calcium carbide – this accounts for around 30% of current and planned BDO production capacity. Additionally, the calcium carbide industry is currently phasing out outdated production capacities, further reducing effective production levels. Therefore, based on its own calcium carbide production capacity, in the future BDO and PBAT products will have advantages in terms of both raw material availability and cost. It is reported that to ensure the progress of the project, Wuhai City has \"in principle agreed to approve changes to the 1.2 million-ton calcium carbide production facility in the Low-Carbon Industrial Park, so that it can serve as a source of raw materials for the integrated new material industry project in Inner Mongolia.\" Integrated project for the production of 900,000 tons/year of BDO and biodegradable plastics. Upon completion, the project will enable the annual production of 900,000 tons of 1,4-butanediol (BDO), 600,000 tons of the biodegradable plastic PBAT, 300,000 tons of the high-end polyether material PTMEG, as well as 100,000 tons/year of the electronic-grade fine chemical product γ-butyrolactone (GBL) and 50,000 tons/year of N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP). Supporting public utility facilities will also be constructed. The project will be constructed in two phases, with an investment of 8.7 billion yuan. The construction scope includes a production facility for 1,4-butanediol (BDO) at 600,000 tons per year, a facility for biodegradable plastic PBAT at 300,000 tons per year, and a facility for high-end polyether material PTMEG at 120,000 tons per year. Additionally, there will be a combined facility for producing acetylene (calcium carbide) at 720,000 tons per year, as well as a facility for producing formaldehyde at 1.2 million tons per year. The second-phase investment amounts to 4.366 billion yuan. The construction scope includes facilities for producing 300,000 tons per year of BDO, 300,000 tons per year of biodegradable plastic PBAT, 180,000 tons per year of high-end polyether material PTMEG, as well as 100,000 tons per year of electronic-grade fine chemical product γ-butyrolactone (GBL) and 50,000 tons per year of NMP. Additionally, a combined facility for producing 360,000 tons per year of acetylene raw materials and a facility for producing 600,000 tons per year of formaldehyde will be built. The construction period is from March 2023 to December 2026.
