Heavy oil thermal cracking generally takes place at 400–600°C； The temperature for cracking olefins from light naphtha is above 800°C.
Can heavy oil only be considered for catalytic cracking below 400°C?
The reaction temperature in catalytic cracking is generally not lower than 500°C; if it falls below 460°C, the plant will initiate interlock procedures. Before the advent of catalytic cracking, only thermal cracking could be used to obtain some gasoline and other components. Later, the addition of a catalyst reduced the reaction conditions, thereby increasing the yield and quality of the product!
The reaction temperature in the coking process is 480–550°C, which falls within the range of deep thermal cracking； The reaction temperature for visbreaking is 400–450°C, which falls under shallow thermal cracking.
