Los Angeles to launch world’s largest green hydrogen power plant

　　According to Sinochem New Network, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced recently that the city has officially stopped using coal for power generation, and that it will put into operation the world’s largest green hydrogen power facility by the second quarter of 2026, in order to achieve its goal of having 100% carbon-free electricity by 2035. 　　Previously, this power plant used coal as fuel; the upgraded generators now operate on a mixture of natural gas and green hydrogen, with an initial ratio of 30% hydrogen and 70% natural gas, and there are plans to gradually transition to 100% hydrogen. The core of the project is to use the huge salt caverns underground in the factory site to store green hydrogen. This hydrogen is produced by electrolyzing water, using electricity derived from renewable sources; the entire production process emits only oxygen. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power states that the project is currently capable of producing 21 million kilograms of hydrogen per year, making it the largest operational green hydrogen project in the world. 　　To address the issue of nitrogen oxides still being generated during hydrogen fuel utilization for power generation, this power plant will employ an advanced catalytic reduction system to ensure emissions remain well below permitted limits and achieve zero carbon dioxide emissions.
