Gentlemen, when diesel fuel is catalytically modified through hydrogenation, which has a higher cetane number – the resulting fuel or straight-run diesel after hydrogenation refining?
Generally speaking, the cetane number of diesel obtained through the hydrorefining of straight-run diesel is significantly higher than that of the product resulting from catalytic diesel upgrading.

Because during the catalytic cracking process, the C16 value is affected to some extent due to the isomerization of primary carbocations and the influence of certain cyclic hydrocarbons. However, the cetane number of catalytically cracked diesel increases slightly after hydrogenation.
After hydroprocessing, the cetane number of catalyzed diesel generally increases by 10–15 units, resulting in a product cetane number of 35–40. For straight-run diesel, hydrorefining typically increases its cetane number by 3–5 units, giving a product cetane number of 48–55. These are general figures; the actual values depend on the properties of the raw material.
