What phenomena occur when the hydrogen sulfide level in the TSA feed of a gas-based hydrogen production plant is too high? How should this be handled? Our company uses a domestic hydrogen production technology based on coal gas. Due to damage to the gas desulfurization equipment in the upstream coking plants, the hydrogen sulfide level in the gas exceeded acceptable limits, which caused the TSA outlet temperature to rise sharply. As a result, the plant had to be shut down and purged with nitrogen.
Hydrogen sulfide reacts with oxygen to produce sulfur and water, which can clog the adsorbent and increase the pressure drop across the bed; the exothermic reaction further leads to overheating.
Due to high hydrogen sulfide levels in the coke oven gas from our upstream sources, the bed temperature exceeded its limits on multiple occasions, forcing us to shut down operations and use nitrogen to purge the bed in order to lower its temperature
