According to Sinochem New Network, Air Liquide recently announced that the world’s first industrial-scale ammonia cracking hydrogen production pilot plant has been put into operation at the Antwerp-Bruges port in Belgium. This device has an ammonia-to-hydrogen production capacity of 30 tons per day. This breakthrough innovation fills a key technical gap in the industrialization of ammonia-based hydrogen production, addresses the challenges associated with long-distance transportation of hydrogen, and provides a viable way to obtain low-carbon and renewable hydrogen for use in the industrial and transportation sectors. The newly introduced proprietary ammonia cracking technology further expands Air Liquide’s technological portfolio in the field of low-carbon and renewable hydrogen production. The successful implementation of this pilot device relies on innovative breakthroughs in several key areas, including process safety, material testing, advanced catalytic technologies for ammonia cracking, ammonia combustion systems, and efficient molecular separation. According to Air Liquide, for the hydrogen economy to develop sustainably, the efficient long-distance transportation of hydrogen is a key challenge that needs to be addressed urgently. Ammonia is a highly valuable hydrogen carrier that can be produced at low cost in regions rich in renewable energy sources such as solar, hydroelectric, and wind energy, or other low-carbon energy sources. Moreover, a mature and comprehensive infrastructure for the large-scale production, transportation, and utilization of ammonia already exists worldwide. This advantage enables ammonia to be exported from regions rich in energy resources to end-users around the world, where it can be converted back into hydrogen through a cracking process, thereby providing crucial support for decarbonization in the industrial and transportation sectors.
