Analysis sometimes uses ppm, %, or mg/Nm3 to express SO2 emissions from exhaust gases; for domestically produced products, mg/Nm3 is the standard unit. The relationships are as follows: 1. There are mass ppm and volume ppm, and it’s essential to clarify this. The original results of analytical testing are usually expressed in terms of mass, that is, mg/Nm3. It is simple to convert this value to volume ppm, by converting the mass of sulfur dioxide alone into a volume value. But it is more difficult to convert this into mass ppm; this requires analyzing the composition of the exhaust gases in order to determine their average molecular weight.
For example: the concentration of the gas entering the converter is A=10.5%. After conversion, the sulfur dioxide content in the gas is B=400 mg/m3. Converting this value gives 400*22.4/64=140 ppm, and 140 ppm equals 0.014%. The conversion rate is calculated as (10.5–0.014)/10.5 = (1–0.015*0.014) = 99.888%
