When in high school, everyone knew that majors such as communication engineering and computer science were good choices; in fact, very few people managed to get into such majors. Most will be assigned to less popular majors. In particular, some social incidents at that time revealed the industry’s high levels of pollution and its tendency to cause diseases; even those who were interested in this sector still hesitated when filling out their college application forms. Nine times out of ten things don’t go as planned, but in the end I was admitted to this major. Upon graduation, I participated in the campus recruitment process and joined a state-owned enterprise controlled by the county-level State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission in the province. Companies are striving to find a way to move up from the low-end to the high-end, and it is precisely at this time that there is a shortage of professionals. I was fortunate to work my way up from a process engineer to the position of deputy plant manager, remaining throughout in the front lines of production management. Enterprise products face fierce homogeneous competition within the industry; the entry barriers are low, the added value is minimal, and profits are slim. However, through years of accumulation, a group of core personnel with strong capabilities in production support has been developed. However, the most core departments of chemical enterprises are ultimately project construction, process technology, and production. The physical processing of raw materials at the initial stage, the use and maintenance of utilities such as water, electricity, steam, and air, ingredient preparation, setting of equipment and process parameters, control of side reactions, improvement of yield, control of energy costs such as electricity consumption, and unit operations like purification and recovery have all become quite mature; there is less room for improvement. It is becoming increasingly difficult to increase product yields, control energy consumption, and improve related metrics. It is undeniable that I am just an ordinary person as well, unable to rise to become a leader in this industry. The company’s leadership has always had high expectations of me and provided various opportunities, yet I still haven’t been able to show my best side. The colleagues who stayed have, time and again, surpassed me in terms of ability, character, and vision. One day, I finally could no longer bear the fact that my desire for achievement was being eroded by time; so I gave up my current position and, driven by impatience and illusions, went to more developed areas in search of opportunities to work with private enterprises.
