On August 22, in the central control room of the Oil and Chemical Processing Department at Liaoyang Petrochemical, rows of screens displayed various production data in real time, with signal lights flashing in an orderly manner. However, just a few months ago, the alarm lights on the control panel gave false alarms frequently, which not only disrupted the normal operation process but also created safety hazards. To address this issue, Liaoyang Petrochemical has made \"alarm management\" a key focus of its efforts, concentrating resources on identifying the root causes of alarms that fail to function properly or trigger erroneously. It conducts comprehensive evaluations and takes systematic action to make these safety \"sentinels\" reliable. The company strictly adheres to the process sheets and operational parameters, scientifically sets and calibrates the alarm values, and avoids arbitrary setting of these values. By stabilizing the reaction conditions and precisely controlling the operational parameters, the scientific validity and accuracy of the alarm system are gradually improved. To date, the stable operation rate of this unit has risen to over 99.98%; not only has the number of alarms decreased significantly, but the unit also operates at full capacity efficiently on a regular basis. At present, Liaoyang Petrochemical continues to refine its experience in alarm management. By strengthening monitoring of the production process and promoting real-time sharing of alarm information as well as coordinated responses, it ensures that the system’s \"neural endings\" are sensitive and reliable, thereby systematically improving the effectiveness of alarms and laying a solid foundation for safe and environmentally sustainable production.

The purpose of reducing alarms is to eliminate the disruption caused by irrelevant and repeated alarms to operators; improving alarm management enhances the efficiency of personnel in responding to alarms and their ability to handle them. But now, in many places, it’s not clear whether the problem lies in the way messages are transmitted or due to other reasons; the main goal for various units is to reduce the number of alerts, with the ultimate aim of eliminating alerts altogether. Aside from increasing the workload on operators, this seems to have no other negative effects – everyone is happy! But what about the derived problems? Is the reduction in alarms due to the cancellation of alarms that should have been triggered? Is there a possibility to increase the alarm value? (Of course, such modifications are certainly within the framework of the system; if nothing goes wrong, that’s fine, but if problems arise, it becomes a matter for the lower-level staff.) What’s concerning is the fact that some operators privately modify the alarm thresholds, disable them, or even alter data in the background Allowing frontline managers to keep conducting inspections is nothing but turning previous obvious problems into a game of hide-and-seek for the grassroots units. When the warning purpose of alarms is no longer feasible, reliance can only be placed on the sense of responsibility of frontline staff.
