Tower that is thicker at the top and thinner at the bottom

I wonder if anyone has encountered a distillation column that is thicker at the top and thinner at the bottom – how should it be operated?
Does this count as thick at the top and thin at the bottom? MTBE’s.
If it is a gas-phase feed, then wouldn’t the diameter of the distillation section be larger than that of the stripping section?
Why is there a distillation column with this structure? What is the purpose of the expansion section?
This is a water scrubber tower, not a distillation tower

In hydrogen peroxide production, there are such towers: extraction towers and drying towers. The large head at the upper part is what we call the separation section
