In the atmospheric and vacuum distillation units, why is there no filter for the atmospheric reflux to the column, while each side stream of the vacuum column has a filter for its reflux? Why?
The vacuum tower is equipped with a filter to prevent the packing from being clogged by debris, which could increase the overall pressure drop in the tower.
What is the side-stream oil from the atmospheric distillation tower? It’s gasoline and diesel; the only other type in this case is wax oil. What about the side-stream oil from the vacuum distillation tower? That’s also wax oil. It goes without saying which type of oil contains more impurities. The atmospheric distillation tower uses trays, so blockages are generally not an issue. The vacuum distillation tower uses structured packing; you can see this clearly by opening the manholes during maintenance. There’s a concern about blockages due to the packing. In the vacuum distillation tower, the high temperatures along with the presence of many impurities can lead to blockages, and coking can occur at any moment
